Council Redundancies (part 2)

A new policy on redundancy payments was also passed last night. I was able to successfully move an amendment basing such payments on the statutory maximum of £310 per qualifying week rather than full salary.

My amendment that any package costing £50,000 or more should be approved by full Council was defeated by 15 votes to 17 and that any such costs should be reported to Council was defeated on the Chairman's casting vote.

It amazes me that the current leadership consider it acceptable that such decisions are taken by a select group of members without all councillors being fully aware of what is done in their name and local residents being aware of how much it is costing them.

If there are good reasons behind any proposal there should be no problem justifying it to Council. The determination not to inform Council supports my view that the current proposals have not been fully thought out and greater savings are being overlooked for reasons not known to us.
